What is an Activity Leader? |
|
Like all Florida Trail Association
members, an activity leader is a VOLUNTEER. Activity leaders volunteer
to lead activities in which they are especially interested and are
especially well-qualified to lead. In order to lead activities that
are published in the Footprint or the
Footnote, a
member must be certified by the state Florida Trail Association.
An FTA activity leader is selected by other experienced activity
leaders who are familiar with the candidate's abilities. Two certified
activity leaders may recommend those persons participating in FTA
activities who exhibit mature judgement, leadership qualities, good
wildlands ethics and skills, and an understanding of FTA purposes
and goals.
Prior to certification as an activity leader, the association requests
that a candidate: |
|
1. |
Regularly take part in leadership workshops
which include Florida Trail policies, practices, and skills. |
|
2. |
Participate as a Co-Leader-In-Training
in the planning and execution of at least two activities led by
at least two different activity leaders. |
|
3. |
Be recommended by those two activity
leaders. |
|
When certified, the new activity leader's
name is added to the state-wide roster of FTA activity leaders. |
|
The activity leader undertakes
certain responsibilities for the activity: |
|
1. |
Scheduling the activity in cooperation
with the chapter activity coordinator. |
|
2. |
Becoming familiar with the territory,
usually by doing a pre-hike scouting trip. |
|
3. |
Providing for each participant to register
on a sign-in list, ensuring that all non-members sign the Assumption
of Risk form, holding the leader, FTA, and landowners harmless from
claims and liability. |
|
4. |
Maintaining an acceptable speed for
the group, with adequate breaks. |
|
5. |
Keeping the group together. |
|
6. |
Offering assistance as needed. |
|
7. |
Submitting a post-activity report to
the chapter activity coordinator. |
|
If you participate in a Florida Trail
activity, please tell the leader if you leave before its conclusion.
After you have enjoyed several activities, you too might volunteer
to be an activity leader. Just let your leader or the chapter activity
chair know. |
